According to recruitment company Hays, Australia’s job market in 2014 is heading for strong growth; a big area of growth in 2014 will be crossover roles. Hays’ Managing Director in Australia and New Zealand states: “Australia’s economy is maintaining momentum and consumer confidence is strong heading into 2014; the economy is expected to grow by 2.8% in 2014, at a slightly faster rate than in 2013”.

Specific trends for 2014 include:

– Increased demand for IT Project Managers, Business Analysts, and ‘Data Scientists’.

– Demand for JavaScript Developers, particularly those with HTML5 and CSS3 skills for web development in order to deal with the ever increasing number of consumers who use tablet-based applications.

– Candidates with multi-level knowledge who are experienced in moving across sectors; for example, merging of technology and marketing functions, and technology and finance functions.

– Short supply of high-level professionals in specific sectors, particularly in technical areas such as IT, construction and engineering.

– Financial services arena is showing high growth signs with jobs across several sectors, including: banking, insurance and financial planning. Senior finance professionals are in very strong demand.

– Increased demand for skilled tradespeople: quality trades and labour staff in the construction industry.

– Candidates should be proactive in their ongoing learning and development. The ever increasing pace of technological change is creating the need for employees who can learn and respond quickly to both their employer’s and the market’s changing demands.

– Candidates who are multi-lingual will be in demand; the ability to speak another language will become an increasingly important business skill.
